Good Media Habits
We, the individual news consumers, can get close to the ideal of a reliable news source by careful discernment and good habits…
- Use multiple news outlets.
- Understand the bias of each.
- Search for sources outside of the US (or your country).
- ALSO understand the bias of each of those.
Rinse, repeat.
Avoid, over and over, the tendency to “settle down” to the one or two sources you have come to trust (or - maybe - agree with?), keep looking for alternate views.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.
— Mark Twain.
This applies now to our news sources as well.
By the way: We also need to learn, and teach, critical thinking.
To be continued.
